RNP & Smart Money
Posted on February 24th, 2010 by Ryan Nicholson.
I shot my first assignment for Smart Money magazine back in January and the issue is out of newsstands. My subject was Jim Moffett of Scout Funds. Jim is the manger of the Scout International Fund and has a degree from Harvard and a MBA from a little university called Stanford. Needless to say I didn’t engage him in any conversation about the stock market or derivatives for fear of making a complete fool of myself.
Here is the tearsheet: (Jim was talking to a co worker who stumbled onto our photoshoot I think I told them it sounded like they were speaking in a foreign language)
And some of my selects that didn’t make the cut:
For someone that manages a fund of $5.1 billion (yes I said billion) you would think Jim would have an ego to match but he was completely gracious and accommodating even when I drug him outside on a blustery January day in Kansas City.
Big thanks to Jim, Kristin and Justin from Barkley for the help coordinating the details of the shoot, Jason Tracy for assisting, and Jane Clark for the assignment.
And Jim if you happen to read this any stock tips are welcome…

I have to agree Ryan, Jim was really a cool guy (pun kinda intended) to work with, particularly so considering how cold it was that day.
All of the images turned out great, but I think I know why the magazine chose the one they did. It would have to be because of the subtle and expert use of the reflector in that shot. It was obviously held by a genius and not some glorified monkey!
Seriously though, I had a great time and it was a real pleasure working on this shoot.

My absolute favorite is the color photo of the woman in the ocean at sunset with the beautiful colors of the night sky reflected in the water. Amazing!
