The most useful tool…

Posted on December 1st, 2008 by Ryan Nicholson.

From time to time I am asked for photography advice (mostly from folks that want to know what camera they should purchase). Just for reference’s sake I am not a huge fan of this question. Don’t get me wrong the camera is an important tool but it is just a small part of the equation.

Anyhow, I have to say after five years in this business and hundreds of photoshoots I don’t think there is a more valuable and versatile tool in my aresnal that my green milk crates. Go ahead and laugh it wouldn’t be the first time someone has poked some fun at my affection for milk crates.

I have used them to haul gear around when I am shooting on location. I can toss my 7b pack and a head and hit the road. They also have come in handy functioning as a “chair” for my subjects to sit on. And more than anything else when I have a tall client or just need a higher point of view they also work as a step stool. Three completely unique uses out of one object….not bad if you ask me.

I don’t want to encourage thugery but if you are an aspiring photographer and plan to shoot on location do yourself a favor and snag a few of these bad boys I promise you won’t regret it.
