Images we love…

Posted on February 22nd, 2009 by Ryan Nicholson.

Sometimes I find myself I falling in love with an image and I really have no specific reason why. The image above falls into that category. I spent some time wandering around the West Bottoms in Kansas City last Wednesday and found this spot. Before I released my shutter I knew it would be an image I would love. Perhaps it is in the texture, or the small splash of color from the graffiti, or even the diagonal line taking your eye out of the image. After I spend a little more time with the image maybe I can put my head around what it is that I am responding to…not that the why is important.

The West Bottoms is an area that I find infinitely interesting visually.

The West Bottoms is one of the oldest areas of Kansas City It is a place that is strangely beautiful and depressing all at the same time.

It was a cold and windy February day in the Midwest. One of those days that I feel sorry for the trees.

My friend and fellow photographer Jason Grubb has his personal project online here.

Jason pays subjects $10 to take their portrait. The images are fantastic and definitely one of those cases where the web just does not do the work justice. I got to see three of his large scale prints from the series on my last trip to Phoenix and they are fabulous.

I look forward to seeing the project grow.

Kudos Mr. Grubb!
